Senator Barack Obama has officially been nominated as the Democratic presidential candidate. Senator Hillary Clinton, his democratic rival, asked the convention to suspend the procedural rules and direct all roll call votes to Obama.

Thousands of anti-war demonstrators converged near security gates outside the Democratic National Convention hall Wednesday.They were chanting slogans and asking to talk to party officials about getting U.S. troops out of Iraq.Police in riot gear ordered the group to disperse. After about 15 minutes, many protesters drifted off. But about 400 gathered several blocks away, still within sight of the PepsiCenter, where the democrats were nominating Barack Obama for president. The protesters wanted to give Obama a letter asking that he agree to an immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq, give full health care benefits to returning troops and veterans, and provide reparations to the Iraqi people for damage caused by the war.The protest began with an anti-war concert by rage against the machine and other groups, which drew about 9,000 people to the Denver Coliseum. Afterward, throngs began the four-mile march toward the PepsiCenter.
Firefighting plane crashes in northwest Colorado, injuring pilot

A firefighting plane battling one of many lightning-caused fires in northwestern Colorado crashed Wednesday, injuring the pilot.The single-engine air tanker went down at 3 p.m. about 20 miles northwest of Meeker, or 170 miles northwest of Denver.Bureau of Land Management spokesman David Boyd says the pilot was conscious and able to move. He was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Grand Junction. The pilot's name hasn't been released.The BLM says the cause of the crash is under investigation.The pilot was working on a small blaze called the flat bush fire that was reported Wednesday morning and was burning in pinon-juniper and sage on BLM land. The agency says it's one of more than 30 lightning-caused fires in northwestern Colorado. Most are estimated at less than an acre in size.The largest blaze in the area is the 27,000-acre Mayberry fire, burning on BLM and private land about 30 miles northwest of Craig. The BLM says more than 75 firefighters have contained about 50 percent of the blaze.
ABC News producer working on convention story is arrested outside Denver hotel

ABC News says one of its producers covering the Democratic Convention was pushed into traffic by a sheriff's deputy today, and then arrested.Asa Eslocker was arrested on charges of interference, trespass and failure to obey a lawful order.Authorities say Eslocker repeatedly had been told to stop blocking a sidewalk and an entrance to Denver’s Brown Palace Hotel. Police say he wasn't arrested until three hours after the first warning.ABC says Eslocker and a film crew were trying to photograph senators and donors for a story on the role of corporate lobbyists and wealthy donors at the convention. The network says video of the incident shows a deputy telling Eslocker that the sidewalk is owned by the hotel, then pushing him into traffic.Denver police Lt. Ron Saunier says he had no information on the claim that Eslocker was pushed into traffic. And he urged the network to show the video to law enforcement.
The Colorado Avalanche announced Wednesday they have signed Joe Sakic to a one-year contract. Avalanche Executive Vice President and General Manager Francois Giguere said "Our entire organization is very excited to have Joe back for another season. As the only captain of the Avalanche, his record of achievement speaks for itself. Having him return is great for our franchise and community, but also for the game of hockey."
